About The Course
The General Medical Council UK reaffirmed its core aims of Appraisals in their "Taking Revalidation Forward" publication in 2017:
"Appraisals aim to create an environment in which lifelong learning can flourish, where doctors are supported to deliver high quality safe care, for all their patients. That means protecting the time needed for doctors to reflect and to learn, without making time-heavy demands on the way they do so ".
This up to date online Advanced Medical Appraiser Update Training Course provides expert guidance on how Appraisers can facilitate these aims, so that each of the Appraisals they facilitate is a rewarding and professionally developmental experience for the Appraisee, which goes far beyond a "tick- box exercise".
The course will be of great benefit to all Appraisers working in the NHS and Independent sectors.
It is for all Appraisers, irrespective of their level of experience of facilitating Appraisals.
The course may also be of value to Appraisees, who are wishing to update and or to develop their Appraisal Preparation skills further.
The course also provides a deep insight into UK medical practice processes from a Clinical Governance and Risk Management point of view, which will be invaluable to all doctors, including those who are new to UK practice and to UK Medical Appraisals and Revalidation.
The course is written in the style of virtual Appraisal workshops, with virtual Appraisers and virtual Appraisee doctors. This allows the reader to immerse themselves in the workshop topics, plus the Appraiser and Appraisee interactions and discussions, in an informative and entertaining way.

About the Author
My name is Dr Mark Golder MB BChir [Cantab], PhD, FRCS [Eng], FRCS [Gen], FRCPath [ME]
I am a UK trained and accredited Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon and a trusted, certified and highly experienced Senior Independent Medical Appraiser.
I have successfully facilitated over 2500 UK Medical Appraisals for doctors working in the UK National Health Service (NHS) and independent sectors, in accordance with the General Medical Council (UK) [GMC] and NHS England guidelines on Medical Appraisals and Revalidation. I have helped these doctors get through their annual Medical Appraisals and Revalidation with ease.
My experience of Risk Management of patient safety has been gained from 20 years of working as a Surgeon in the front line of acute medical services in the UK NHS and also from the considerable volume of Appraisal work that I have done. This has included the scrutiny of numerous Significant Events, Complaints, Performance + Conduct Investigations and Litigation Claims, that doctors have been involved in.
I also have considerable experience in appraising doctors who are under investigation by the GMC - this accounts for, on average, 10% of my appraisal work.
This particular aspect of my work, requires a high level of understanding of GMC requirements for Medical Appraisalsand Revalidation, but also experience in Medical Risk Management of patient safety and the associated potential events and scenarios that commonly lead a doctor to being placed under investigation.
My General Medical Council (UK) registration number is: 4260026
